THAT was an amazing experience for both of us.
Little did we know that such a gem of a place exists so close to home.
The beach, yes!
The beach is unlike the beach of any other beach town I've seen here in the US. The actual beach is located on Assateague Island. Assateague is located east of the island of Chincoteague.
Assateague Island is protected, it is a National Park and National Seashore.
You will find zero houses on the island, zero restaurants, zero ice cream shops, zero hotels. There is nothing there.
Well, there is splendid nature, wild life and a fantastic beach, and a light house.
There are also walking trails on the island. And, you can drive your car all the way out to the beach.
As a visitor you'll pay an 8 dollar fee to get access to the island.
The wild life is spectacular.
We saw the wild ponies that roam free on the islands, I saw plenty, plenty of white egrets and other birds. It was fantastic. A paradise for a bird watcher.
Well, I'll show you some pics now.
Just come along!!
There are wild ponies out there! In this pic!
A beautiful white egret. There were so many, many of them !
Birds of all shapes and sizes!
You can see the lighthouse in the distance.
My hubby loves the beach and the ocean. He can stay in the water for hours with his surfboard, or boogie board. I often think that the waves are too scary, too big, for me. I believe the undercurrents are too strong, and the rip tide scares me. Peter is cool, and used to it. Me? I prefer to sit on my beach chair exactly on the shore line. Sometimes I get in, but I usually think that the water is a bit too wild. Call me a coward, that is all right. How warm the water is? I'd say around 80 F (27 C).
He's at it!! It is hard to surf on a regular surfboard in the Atlantic Ocean (with a few exceptions), so Peter is content with the boogie board. The waves are not big enough on this coast, you'll have to go to the Pacific Ocean for the really big surf-waves!
The beach is not very crowded, I love IT!!!
This was our shelter away from the sun, a so called sports-brella! Better than a regular beach umbrella. It'll protect you from both the sun and the wind. I can really recommend one of these!
As you can see it is not all that crowded at this beach. However, it got more "populated" as the day progressed. But, you will never really find big crowds at this beach. It is also so BIG and long so you can easily get away if there are any crowds!
And, in the evenings we were watching the sunsets in the town of Chincoteague. We found a bar right outside our hotel that totally catered to the sunset!
Fantastic and GOOD!!
As I said, a good one :-)
I am SO thankful that I finally got to see these islands!
Yes, we will return, for sure!
I think they (the islands) might be at their best this time of the year. There are no crowds, the water is so warm and it is quiet.
DO not go here if you want to party, drink all night and go clubbing. There are NO such things!
It is you, the nature, the ocean and a few bars and restaurants. THAT's it!
It is my kinda place.
A pleased blogger!
Have a lovely Tuesday!!
