-George Michael is coming to DC this summer!!
George Michael, my idol since my late teens. I’ll never forget the first time I heard “Careless Whisper”, I thought it was too good for words. I remember that I ran out and got the single immediately.
(do I even have to mention that this video was watched over and over and over and over again among my friends on our VCR's. THIS is the GM we were so in love with, yes, that is true :-). We did not KNOW back then OK ;-) )
One of my friends back home introduced me to Wham when I was about, say, 18? I loved them from the get-go, from “Wham Rap” and on, and since then George Michael has continued to amaze me.
I think he is a genius with his song-writing and his music, one of a kind.
And yes, I think I was a bit in love with the guy as well (all right that was way before he came out of the closet. All girls went starry eyed as soon as GM was mentioned).
I saw him in concert and I still, to this day, think that is the best concert I have ever been to. That concert took place in Stockholm in the late 80’s.
In the beginning, George was more of a teen-age-pop-king, but when he got older his music turned darker, and deeper.
For example I think “Jesus to a Child” is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
(Jeus to a Child, the older darker GM...And I do think this is one of the best songs ever written. Just listen to the lyrics)
I’ve come to realize that the world is divided. You either like George, or you don’t. There is nothing in between. Yesterday’s breakfast was clearly divided: Sara and I love him; Lotta, Monica and Susanna do not like him at all.
In Sweden I think all my friends “are on my side”, please correct me if I am wrong, friends!
For the longest time I thought George was banned in the US, but I must have been wrong because now he is doing a huge US tour. I thought the whole public bathroom m-s-tr-bting mess got him thrown out, but now he’s back in the game again. Good for him.
I am so happy! No, I won’t see him in concert. Instead I will be in Finland while he takes the States by storm again. But I can always sit there listening to him on my iPod, or I can torture my family with playing him on the iPod speakers.
There are few artists that have stuck with me for a long time. George is probably the one, and then maybe the Swedish singer Lena Philipsson…Is that all there is??? Maybe, I totally have to think about this.
Euro-pop is clearly just Euro-pop many times. I have so many songs on my iPod that Peter has never heard in his entire life. Likewise there are so many American songs that I never, ever heard while growing up, and when in Sweden on vacation I hear new and happening music that will never make it to the shores of America.
(And on of my absolute favorite GM songs of all time, Everything she Wants. When I hear this song I get transefered right back to my glamorous late teen/early twenty yers)
So how about you? Are you a fan of George Michael? If you are, what songs do you like the very best?
Are you a fan of Euro-pop?
A tip for the US-crowd; listen to the song in the post below, that is a true Euro-song that I loved when I was 19-20.
People, enjoy some good music today! And have a great Tuesday!
