This Week: Chicken Pox, and Then Some...

I don't know if you all know that Karolina had the chicken pox a little while ago. Yes, she did, even though she's vaccinated (so much for THAT vaccine!!!) Apparently you can get it (the pox) even if you're vaccinated, and PLEASE, do show me a single kid in the US who's NOT vaccinated.
Anyway, she got it...It started as little innocent bumps on her skin. Peter and I thought it was Impetigo, but after she started to scratch the red dots I took her to the doctor. Sure enough, and no doubt in the doctors mind, it was the POX! So, hurray, kept her home from school for two days + the following weekend.
Was she sick as a dog? NO, she was as happy and fine as always only she had a few red dots scattered over her body.
Then, last week, before Thanksgiving Karolina told me that several of her class mates had come down with the pox. Oh man, I can tell you that it felt terrible for me, AND for Karolina...THE POX spreader at her school!!! Her best friend was sent home with the pox last Wednesday, the day before the BIG holiday. Oh, and the kids all got a letter sent home, written by the principal, where you'd learned about the big POX outbreak at the school! Hohum, how fun...La, la, la...Guilt trip! Here I come!!!
Today Karolina told me that at least seven kids in her class was out with the pox over the holiday...I can only hope that they had mild cases of it, just like Karolina had.
I talked to one of the other moms at school today and she was CURSING the pox. Do you think I admitted that we were the source of the lovely pox? No, of course not. I mostly nodded and agreed with her.
I hope the pox will soon be a distant memory at the school, and may they never find out that MY daughter started the "plague"...

SO, now we are here at the end of November...I am taking my walks every day, of course. Most of the time I walk up to Starbucks for my latte fix. Love it. Especially now when Starbucks have started making all the Holiday lattes again. Mmmmmm...it is SO good: Gingerbread latte, eggnog latte and peppermint mocha...And of course, my favorite, the pumpkin spice latte. It is like taking a little sip of Christmas every time you drink your latte.

Anyway, when I go to Starbucks I just walk in and out very quickly, order my drink and then I am out again. But now I've start noticing more and more of the "latte moms" at Starbucks. They come in with their strollers, after their morning walk I am sure. They sit down and take up at least two tables. The kids are tiny, either babies or very young toddlers. The strollers are big and bulky, and it is in the middle of the morning rush. Does it bother me? No, not much. It actually reminds me of Stockholm where you see the so called Latte Moms everywhere, at every coffee shop, at every cafe. There they are with their BIG Swedish Emmaljunga, Brio and the German made Teutonia strollers, taking up a heck of a lot of room in the coffee shops being the center of irritation and/or amusment for the other patrons. Now they are here, too...And I do like it!

All right...And now Karolina and I will enjoy the latest American Girl movie, Molly. We TiVo:d the movie last night and now we are ready to enjoy it.
I'll have to say that I really like the whole American Girl concept.
But, I can write about the American Girl hoopla-ho in another post at some other time...

Over and out...

Karolina, patient zero for the chicken pox outbreak at Sunrise Valley Elementary School ;-) Yes, no need to share that tidbit with the other mom. But it happens and there's nothing to be done save keeping Karolina in a bubble all her life so she doesn't catch or spread anything. Good that she had a mild case, though.

Ojojoj.

Keith:
Patient zero is right.
A mild case it was, and I think it was the same for the other kids as well...

Jill:

I don't think it was Karolina's fault. sounds to me like the vaccine the year all of those kids got it wasn't effective. I say you blame the vaccine.
PS. Now even the comments on your "English" day are in Swedish! It's getting harder to try to keep up with you....

Getting harder, I know...

No, it is not karolina's fault. It just feels that way...

Hejsan!

Hihi - that's what's called local terrorism - stage moms causing epidemics in schools! Didn't know you could still get it... I thought we were home free considering the number of shots they get from birth here... maybe I should read all those handouts our pediatrician keep giving us a bit better.....

Annika said...

Jacal:
You and me both...I just heard that they are actually giving BOOSTER shots to kids around 8-12 years old now...who knew???
I know, whacko stage mom spreads the plague...

Annika - we should go out and get lattes together sometime. My favorite is the peppermint mocha. I continue to drink it well into January to hold on to that Christmas spirit!

Annika said...

Suzy:
I drank that today! But at Nordstrom's coffee shop, you know. Starbucks is better.
Love it! Yes, let us go out and have a latte or a mocha soon, soon!!!
